Man City Great Fernandinho Ends Professional Football Career at 40

By Ireti Asemota.

Manchester City’s legendary Brazilian warrior Fernandinho has called time on a glittering 21-year career at the age of 40, closing the chapter on one of the most decorated and universally respected midfielders of the modern game.

From the moment he walked into the Etihad in 2013, Fernandinho became the heartbeat of City’s transformation into a European superpower. Over nine transformative years, he lifted:

  • 5× Premier League titles
  • 6× League Cups
  • 1× FA Cup
  • 2× Community Shields

383 appearances. 26 goals. Countless tackles, interceptions, and leadership moments that turned games and seasons.

Before the sky-blue glory, he dominated Eastern Europe with Shakhtar Donetsk: 6 Ukrainian Premier Leagues, 5 Ukrainian Cups, and the 2009 UEFA Cup — the last European trophy won by a Ukrainian club.

He bookended his career where it all began — Athletico Paranaense — the club that launched him in 2003. After a brief cameo this week against Atlético Mineiro, the 40-year-old admitted post-match: “I’m already tired. I ran for 30-something minutes today, and I’m exhausted. There’s nothing in football that motivates me anymore. I’ve achieved everything I could. Now it’s time to enjoy my family.”

A 53-cap Brazil international who was cruelly overlooked for the 2014 and 2018 World Cups despite being in peak form, Fernandinho’s legacy transcends trophies. He was the destroyer who allowed Silva, De Bruyne, and Touré to create. The captain who led through the darkest days of 2020-21 and the brightest nights of the 2022 title race. The man Pep Guardiola called “one of the best defensive midfielders in the world — and I’ve coached some of the very best.”

X is flooded with love:

  • “Fernandinho was the glue that held City together. Underrated legend.” (500K+ likes)
  • “No drama, no ego, just pure class. Proper captain.”
  • “The most important signing of the Abu Dhabi era — fight me.”

Club legends lined up:

  • Vincent Kompany: “My brother in arms. The best teammate I ever had.”
  • Kevin De Bruyne: “Everything I achieved at City, I owe a huge part to him.”
  • Pep Guardiola: “He made my job easier every single day.”

With no new contract at Athletico, the door is wide open for a coaching return to Manchester City — insiders say Pep is already pushing for him to join the staff. A future ambassador role also feels inevitable.

Fernandinho leaves the game the way he played it: quietly, perfectly, and forever respected.

Thank you, Dinho. The Etihad will never forget you. 💙 #Fernandinho #ThankYouDinho #ManCityLegend
