Man Sentenced for Wife’s Murder After Blaming Nonexistent Intruders

By Peter.

A South African court has convicted Rameez Patel, a 45-year-old businessman from Polokwane, of murdering his 28-year-old wife, Fatima Patel, in a shocking 2015 case where he staged the crime as a home robbery. The Limpopo High Court in Polokwane delivered the guilty verdict on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, ending a decade-long legal battle marked by witness disappearances, family shootings, and dramatic testimony.

The Crime: A Staged Murder in Nirvana

On April 21, 2015, Rameez shot Fatima in the face at their apartment in Nirvana, west of Polokwane, leaving her in a pool of blood. He fled the scene but returned around 6 p.m., discovering her body and reporting a “house robbery” to police. Emergency services pronounced her dead at the scene from the gunshot wound.

Investigators arrested Patel six days later. He was granted R250,000 bail on June 2, 2015, but his bail was revoked post-conviction. Provincial police spokesperson Brig. Hlulani Mashaba detailed:

“Evidence presented before the court revealed that on the morning of the incident, Patel shot his wife in the face inside their apartment… Later that same day, at around 6pm, Patel returned… and reported the matter to the police, alleging that a house robbery had taken place.”

Decade of Drama: Witnesses Flee, Family Targeted

The trial was plagued by intrigue:

  • Witness Tampering: State witnesses—a domestic worker and Patel’s business employee—joined witness protection but fled the country.
  • 2017: Patel’s mother, Mahejeen Banu Patel (51), was shot dead at her Nirvana home alongside her domestic worker; Patel is accused in her murder.
  • 2018 Shooting: Brother Razeen Patel survived an assassination attempt a day before testifying in Fatima’s case. He fled to Britain but returned in November 2018, claiming Rameez confessed the killing and entrusted him with a box of evidence (later retrieved).

Razeen’s testimony proved pivotal, detailing the confession and cover-up.

Verdict and Next Steps

Patel faces sentencing on December 17, 2025. Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Thembi Hadebe praised the investigating unit and tracking team: “This conviction brings closure… and justice for Fatima and her family.”

The case underscores South Africa’s challenges with witness intimidation and familial violence in high-profile murders.
