Lionel Messi has made it clear: another World Cup triumph trumps a ninth Ballon d’Or.
In a candid interview shared by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X (Wednesday), the Argentine icon was asked to choose between lifting the global trophy again or claiming another individual accolade. His response was immediate:
“World Cup or another Ballon d’Or? Another World Cup.”
The statement reflects Messi’s deep-rooted passion for international success, especially after captaining Argentina to glory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar—widely regarded as the crowning achievement of his legendary career.
Despite holding a record eight Ballon d’Or titles, Messi’s preference for collective glory on the world stage over personal honors underscores his team-first mentality.
On life after football, Messi revealed he would rather become a club owner than a manager.
“I’d say club owner,” he said when posed with the choice.
The 37-year-old also addressed speculation about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. While expressing excitement about the possibility, he emphasized a pragmatic approach:
“I’ll only play if I feel physically ready and able to help the team.”
