Meta begins trial charging £9.99 per month for sharing multiple links on Facebook

eta, the company behind Facebook, is trialing a new subscription model that restricts how many external web links users can share without paying a monthly fee of approximately £9.99. This move primarily targets creators and businesses using Facebook’s Professional Mode, which allows enhanced engagement features for brands and content creators.

Under the trial, certain profiles and Pages are limited to sharing just two external links per month unless they subscribe to Meta Verified. Meta says the test is designed to evaluate whether offering expanded link-sharing capabilities provides additional value to paying subscribers.

While news publishers are currently exempt from this limitation, industry experts warn the change could reduce traffic to third-party sites and affect businesses and content creators who rely on external links to drive website visits and audience engagement.

Meta describes the trial as a limited experiment aimed at increasing subscription adoption and exploring new revenue models for the platform beyond free accounts.
