The 2025 Miss Universe pageant held in Thailand has been marked by significant drama and controversy. Over 120 contestants from around the world gathered to compete in one of the most prestigious beauty pageants. However, tensions erupted behind the scenes, capturing global attention.
The Incident with Miss Mexico
A major incident involved Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, who walked out of a meeting after being publicly insulted by the pageant’s Thai director, Nawat Itsaragrisil. During a livestream, Nawat appeared to call her a “dumbhead”, accusing her of not promoting the pageant on social media. He later denied using this exact term. Supported by other contestants, including Miss Iraq, Bosch left the venue, stating that women should be empowered and respected.
Reactions and Support
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised Bosch as “an example of how we women should speak out.” The Mexican embassy confirmed continued communication with Bosch and her family to provide support.
Organizational Response
Raul Rocha, President of the Miss Universe Organization, condemned Nawat’s behavior as “public aggression” and announced limitations to his role. Nawat publicly apologized at a press conference, expressing remorse and citing the pressure he faced.
Past Issues and Additional Controversies
This is not Nawat’s first controversy. Last year, contestants of Miss Grand International, another pageant he leads, protested poor treatment during a river cruise in Cambodia.
Additionally, the pageant faced police scrutiny after contestants filmed promotional clips involving casino-branded pillows—a breach of Thailand’s strict anti-gambling laws.
Looking Ahead
The grand finale of Miss Universe 2025 is scheduled for November 21 in Nonthaburi province. Organizers hope the remaining event will focus on the competition itself, free from further disruptions.
