Murder-Suicide Attempt Ends in Death of 88-Year-Old’s Wife

By Peter.

An 88-year-old Texas man has admitted to fatally shooting his terminally ill wife of 65 years before turning the gun on himself in a failed suicide attempt, according to Galveston Police.

Ernest Leal Sr. told investigators he killed his 89-year-old wife, Anita “Annie” Leal, because she was “sick and no longer wished to live,” per a Galveston PD affidavit obtained by KPRC. The tragic incident unfolded on November 17, 2025, around 4:50 a.m. at their Galveston home on the Gulf Coast.

What Happened

Police were alerted by Annie’s medical alert device, which detected a potential emergency. Officers arrived to find her on the bedroom floor with a gunshot wound to the head; she was pronounced dead at the scene. Ernest, who had a self-inflicted wound to his head, was hospitalized and later questioned. He confessed: He shot Annie while she lay in bed, then tried to end his own life—but the gun jammed.

Ernest claimed Annie’s unnamed illness caused immense suffering, and she expressed a desire not to live anymore. He said he was “going crazy” at the time.

The couple, married since 1960, shared three grown children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who affectionately called Annie “Mimi” or “Mimi Annie,” per her obituary.

Court Appearance and Charges

Ernest made his first court appearance on November 25, 2025, wheeled in on a wheelchair due to his injuries and age. Charged with first-degree murder, his bond was reduced from $250,000 to $80,000. He remains in custody; no trial date set.

Galveston DA Jack Roady called it a “heartbreaking case,” but emphasized the investigation’s thoroughness. No foul play beyond the confession was found.

This devastating story of love, illness, and despair has gripped Texas—our thoughts are with the Leal family during this unimaginable time.
