The suspended former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku, has said his resignation from the position was “purely for personal reasons.”
In a statement issued on Monday by his media team, Agbebaku said he maintained a cordial working relationship with all 24 members of the House throughout his tenure.
“Differences will naturally arise because we all have our individual identities and beliefs. However, that did not stop us from passing people-oriented Bills and Resolutions in the last three years of my leadership,” he stated.
The lawmaker representing Owan West Constituency further explained that his decision to resign was taken “in the interest of peace, the state, and his immediate constituency.”
Agbebaku expressed appreciation to Governor Monday Okpebholo for his support and cooperation during his tenure, while reaffirming his loyalty to the party and the state.
He also urged his supporters to “remain calm and to continue to believe in the greater good and the development of democracy in the state.”
The former Speaker congratulated his successor, Yekini Idaiye, and other newly elected principal officers of the House, calling for peaceful coexistence among lawmakers as the Assembly continues its legislative duties.
It would be recalled that Agbebaku resigned as Speaker on Monday during a brief plenary session, shortly after reports of an alleged impeachment plot and the suspension of himself and the Majority Leader.
