My so-called impeachment, distraction not worth rational consideration, Eghe Ogbemudia reacts
3 min readThe Chairman of Egor Local Government Council of Edo State, Ms. Eghe Ogbemudia, has ddscribed her purported impeachment as a distraction that should not be given rational consideration.
Ogbemudia in a statement late Friday, urged members of the public to disregard her “so-called impeachment by a few Councillors”.
She said the purported impeachment of herself and Vice, that she read online, cannot be true “because it’s in contradictions with the supremacy of the laws in Edo State and in Nigeria.”
She noted that being a democrat and an advocate of rule of law, she wouldn’t interfere with the constitutional roles of the Councillors in the local government.
“The news should be disregarded and the actions should not be attached with rational consideration.
“The purported impeachment was carried out by a minority of Councillors, and not founded on any known laws or provisions of the Constitution of Nigeria,” she said.
The embattled LG boss insisted that since assumption of office as the Council chairman, she has not acted in breach of the provisions of the laws of the local government council, neither was there any query from the Councillors that should warrant her impeachment.
She blamed those she described as “disgruntled elements who are interested in causing crisis” for the alleged impeachment, with the intent to gain access to the council treasury.
According to her, “The unruly and unconstitutional method of the so-called impeachment clearly points to the sponsorship of disgruntled elements interested in crisis in Egor Local Government Area.
“Their ultimate aim is unholy access to the funds of the Local Government to serve their personal interest. The good people of Egor Local Government Area should snub these enemies of democracy and these enemies of development in our Local Government Area.
“Since my assumption of office as the Chairman of Egor Local Government Area, I have never acted in breach of the provisions of the laws of the Local Government Area, the State and the Constitution of Nigeria.
“There is no query before me from the Councillors or any authorised body that requires my response. On what basis were the issues of my impeachment and that of the Vice Chairman discussed?”
She, therefore, urged members of staff of the council to concentrate on their constitutional roles at the council, just as she urged the good people of Egor to be law-abiding and go about their normal businesses.
“I am using this medium to appeal to the good people of Egor Local Government Area to maintain law and order and totally disregard the unlawful action of this minority Councilors.
“My interest and dedication to the people of Egor Local Government Area is to ensure peaceful co- existence, security of lives and property and development that will enhance the well- being of all,” she added.
Ogbemudia however advised the Councillors behind her ordeal to “concern themselves with their responsibility in line with the laws and Constitution of Nigeria, and should refused to be used by those that are clearly against democracy and development in Egor Local Government Area.”
