Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Wednesday laid before the Kano State House of Assembly the biggest budget in the history of any northern state: a colossal ₦1,368,127,929,271 for 2026, tagged a “bold but realistic roadmap” for Kano’s transformation.
Breakdown at a glance
- Capital Expenditure: ₦934.6 billion (68%) – one of the highest capital-to-recurrent ratios in recent Nigerian history
- Recurrent Expenditure: ₦433.4 billion (32%)

- Education – ₦405.3 billion (30%)
- Infrastructure – ₦346.2 billion (25%)
- Health – ₦212.2 billion (16%)
Other major sectors – Agriculture, Security, Commerce, Water Resources, Environment, Tourism, Women/Youth Empowerment, and People With Special Needs – also got “substantial” allocations, per the governor.
In his address, Yusuf declared: “These allocations demonstrate our unwavering determination to invest heavily in human capital development, safeguard the well-being of our people, and lay the physical foundation for sustainable growth.”
He urged the lawmakers, led by Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, for swift passage while promising full transparency and legislative oversight to turn the numbers into “tangible projects and services.”
The presentation fulfills the governor’s Monday letter citing Section 121 of the 1999 Constitution, setting the stage for what Kano calls its most ambitious development push yet.
