The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning about the rising circulation of unregistered and substandard edible oils across Nigeria.
According to a statement shared on the agency’s X handle, the products flagged include FINO, PUR, OKI, SUPER DELICIEX, and LA JONIC. NAFDAC noted that the sources, production processes, and safety standards of these oils are unknown, and the products are being smuggled into the country and sold under various brand names in major markets. Some of the affected cities include Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ikom, Calabar, Lagos (Trade Fair, Okiarin, Ikotun, Mushin), Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Idiroko, Makurdi, and Lafia.
The agency emphasized that these edible oils lack identifiable manufacturer details and NAFDAC registration numbers and are not listed in its regulatory database.
Lebruni Agro Limited, a registered Nigerian manufacturer of edible soybean oil (Liorga oil) and palm kernel oil, raised concerns about the influx of these substandard oils following its internal market surveillance. The company highlighted that the identified brands maintain warehousing facilities to support their illegal distribution networks.
NAFDAC urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected substandard or unregistered edible oils to the nearest NAFDAC office.
“These products are obviously not registered by NAFDAC and are not available on the NAFDAC database. Please report any suspected substandard or unregistered edible oil to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the agency stated.
