Nigeria’s House of Representatives has scheduled a full-day emergency debate on national security for Thursday, as killings, abductions, and attacks escalate across the country.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the session during Tuesday’s plenary, stressing the need for urgent, united action from lawmakers and security chiefs.
The move follows renewed global spotlight on Nigeria’s crisis after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed “record numbers of Christians” are being killed and warned of possible swift U.S. military intervention—remarks that have sparked controversy but underscored the gravity of the situation.
Tensions flared in the chamber when Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda tried to raise an urgent motion over the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi and the murder of a senior military officer. Speaker Abbas intervened, explaining that Thursday’s dedicated session would comprehensively address all such incidents.
“We are deeply pained by these tragedies,” Abbas said, urging security agencies to overhaul their strategies and intensify operations to protect lives and property.
He directed all lawmakers to prepare detailed reports on insecurity in their constituencies, adding: “Thursday will allow every member to lay bare the specific security challenges facing their people.”
