The Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF) has raised concerns over the escalating plastic pollution crisis in Nigeria, warning that it poses serious threats to both the environment and public health. The organization highlighted that improper disposal and widespread use of plastics are contributing to flooding, soil contamination, and increased exposure to harmful chemicals.
NCF experts explained that plastics, particularly single-use items, can release toxic substances into water sources and food chains, increasing the risk of respiratory issues, hormonal imbalances, and other health problems. The foundation urged citizens, industries, and policymakers to take immediate action to reduce plastic waste, promote recycling, and adopt sustainable alternatives.
The warning comes amid growing evidence that plastic pollution is worsening in urban and rural areas alike, with rivers, streets, and drainage systems frequently clogged by discarded plastic. NCF called on governments to enforce stricter regulations on plastic production, usage, and disposal, while encouraging public awareness campaigns to educate communities about the health and environmental hazards.
NCF emphasized that tackling plastic pollution requires collective action from individuals, businesses, and regulatory bodies. By adopting eco-friendly practices, Nigeria can mitigate health risks, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable living for future generations.
