Nigeria’s active electricity customer base grew from 11.89 million in July to 11.96 million in August 2025, marking a steady rise in connections across the country’s 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos), as reported by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). ⚡️🇳🇬
The Commission’s latest Metering Factsheet for July-August 2025, shared on its official social media on Monday, revealed that 6.58 million customers now have meters—pushing the national metering rate to 55.01%, a modest improvement from 54.71% the previous month.
In August alone, 70,888 new meters were installed (down slightly from 76,783 in July), highlighting continued efforts to close the metering gap in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
NERC attributed the progress to ongoing reforms and DisCo investments in customer management, which are boosting billing accuracy and building consumer confidence.
Top Performers in Metering Coverage:
- Ikeja DisCo: 84.83% 🥇
- Eko DisCo: 84.25% 🥈
- Abuja DisCo: 73.92% 🥉
Back in April 2025, NERC slapped penalties totalling over ₦628 million on eight DisCos—Abuja, Ikeja, Eko, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola—for exceeding monthly caps on estimated billing for unmetered customers. The companies were also ordered to issue credit adjustments to affected users.
Earlier data from NERC’s Q2 2025 report showed a strong quarterly push: 225,631 meters installed between April and June—a 20.55% jump from Q1’s 187,161.
Breakdown of Q2 Installations:
- Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework: 147,823 (65.52%)
- Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF): 65,315
- Vendor Financed: 12,259
- DisCo Financed: 234
These developments signal gradual but positive strides toward reducing estimated billing and improving service reliability in Nigeria’s power sector. 🔌📈
