Nigeria Aims to Generate ₦1.49tn from Power Export Boost

By Peter.

In a game-changing move for West Africa’s energy map, Nigeria has successfully synchronized its national grid with 15 ECOWAS countries for the first time ever — and the payoff could be massive: close to $1 billion (≈₦1.49 trillion) in annual revenue from exporting 600 MW of electricity once full commercial trading kicks off in June 2026.

Historic 4-Hour Test (Nov 8, 2025) From 05:04 am to 09:04 am, Nigeria’s grid ran in perfect harmony with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) covering Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and others. For those four hours, the entire sub-region operated at one stable frequency — a feat that collapsed after just seven minutes when attempted in 2007.

Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu called it “the most successful synchronisation in WAPP history” and confirmed a second 48-hour test is coming soon, paving the way for permanent linkage by mid-2026.

The Money Math

  • Nigeria currently reserves 600 MW daily for bilateral exports
  • Regional tariff averages $0.19/kWh (vs Nigeria’s $0.07/kWh domestic rate) → 600 MW × $0.19 × 24 hrs × 365 days = ≈$998.6 million/year

That’s nearly $1 billion in fresh forex — enough to plug liquidity gaps, fund new plants, and ease pressure on the naira.

Why This Works Now

  • Transmission capacity now at 8,500 MW (up from chronic bottlenecks)
  • 60% of Gencos have adopted Free Governor Control (up from 20%) — critical for automatic frequency balancing across borders
  • When a plant tripped in Côte d’Ivoire during the test, Nigerian generators auto-adjusted in seconds, proving the system is rock-solid

Domestic Supply Safe Adelabu and NISO MD Abdul Mohammed stressed: Export will NOT affect Nigerians. Actual generation hovers around 5,000 MW because Discos can’t take more — leaving ~3,500 MW stranded daily. Exporting the spare 600 MW actually strengthens the grid and brings in dollars.

X is Lit #NigeriaPowerExport and #WAPP are trending hard:

  • “$1bn forex yearly just from spare electricity? That’s how you fix an economy” [post:8]
  • Skeptics: “Let them first give us 20 hours light in Kano before exporting” [post:15]

From perpetual grid collapses to becoming West Africa’s power bank in one decade — Nigeria just flipped the script. June 2026 can, the lights (and the money) start flowing both ways. Who’s ready? ⚡️💰🇳🇬 #PowerPool #NigeriaExportsLight
