The former National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Mrs. Oluchi Opara, has attributed Nigeria’s persistent insecurity challenges to a lack of courageous leadership.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Mrs. Opara emphasized that the country can only overcome its security crises if bold leaders at both the National and State Assemblies confront issues head-on, without fear or favour.
“Elected members of the National Assembly must rise to address urgent national issues such as insecurity courageously. Leadership demands standing firm, especially when millions of Nigerians face hardships due to unchecked terrorist activities,” she said.
Mrs. Opara expressed concern over recent Senate plenary proceedings, noting that certain debates could hinder efforts to tackle insecurity effectively. She commended Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for his courage and patriotism during the debates.
“Senator Abaribe rightly criticized the continuous habit of blaming past administrations. He reminded lawmakers that today’s challenges unfold under the current government. True leadership requires taking responsibility, addressing root causes, and finding meaningful solutions rather than recycling excuses,” she added.
She further highlighted that in the face of corruption, rising insecurity, and economic hardship, Senator Abaribe’s intervention reaffirmed that accountability and integrity remain critical for national progress. His stance, she said, renewed hope for Nigerians yearning for leaders who speak boldly and act decisively.
Mrs. Opara concluded by urging both the Red and Green Chambers of the National Assembly to confront the menace threatening Nigeria’s peace, unity, and development. She noted that the courage displayed by Senator Abaribe and a few others is a reminder that integrity still has a place in Nigerian politics, echoing the expectations of citizens demanding responsible governance.
