Nigeria’s smartphone shipment grows by 29% amid currency gains

By Peter

Nigeria’s smartphone market recorded a 29% year-on-year surge in shipments in the third quarter of 2025, signaling a gradual return to stability after a turbulent 2024 marked by currency volatility.

According to technology market analyst Omdia, the stronger naira provided the predictability needed for vendors and consumers, driving a rebound in device imports and sales. The sub-$100 segment saw a remarkable 57% growth, led by entry-level models from brands such as Transsion’s TECNO, Infinix, and itel, catering to Nigeria’s youthful and price-sensitive market.

Nigeria’s recovery also boosted Africa’s overall smartphone shipments by 24%, ending a five-quarter decline across the continent. Globally, smartphone shipments grew modestly by 3%, highlighting Nigeria’s critical role as a driver of growth in emerging markets.

Omdia noted that while global mid-to-premium device demand remains resilient, markets such as the Middle East are expected to slow, constrained by rising component costs. Despite this, brands like HONOR and Apple recorded strong growth in the region.

The Q3 2025 figures underscore how currency stability can significantly influence consumer technology adoption, cementing Nigeria’s position as a key growth engine for the African and global smartphone markets.
