Norway’s Crown Princess Faces Lung Transplant, Palace Confirms

By Comfort Asemota

Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit is expected to undergo a lung transplant after a noticeable deterioration in her health over recent months, the royal household has confirmed.

The 52-year-old royal, who is married to Crown Prince Haakon—the heir to the Norwegian throne—was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. The chronic lung disease causes progressive scarring of the lungs, significantly limiting the body’s ability to absorb oxygen.

In an official statement, the Royal Palace revealed that medical examinations conducted during the autumn showed a clear decline in the crown princess’s condition. However, officials noted that a final decision has not yet been made regarding when she will be placed on the transplant waiting list.

Professor Are Martin Holm of Oslo University Hospital’s pulmonary unit stated that medical preparations are already in progress.

“We are approaching the stage where a lung transplant will be necessary, and we are taking the required steps to ensure everything is ready when the time comes,” he said.

The announcement has sparked widespread concern and attention across Norway, with many citizens closely following updates on the crown princess’s health.
