The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved a comprehensive overhaul of waste collection and management services across Abuja, set to begin Monday, November 17, 2025.
The decision was announced Thursday following the FCT Executive Committee meeting chaired by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Speaking at a post-meeting briefing, Coordinator of the Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC), Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, confirmed that the committee ratified contracts for new waste management service providers to operate in various districts of the territory.
“This is a deliberate step to restore order and cleanliness in the FCT,” Obuah said. “Residents have long complained about irregular waste collection. With these new contractors, we expect a cleaner, healthier Abuja.”
The approved measures include:
- Deployment of new waste collection fleets
- Procurement of basic waste treatment plants
- Maintenance and operation of supervisory utility vehicles
Emergency Waste Clearance in AMAC
Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, Mandate Secretary of the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), disclosed that the committee also approved N111,913,176 for the emergency evacuation of waste from open dumps, waterways, and streams in the Dogon Gada community within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
“This is an immediate intervention to prevent flooding and environmental hazards ahead of the dry season,” Zulkiflu stated.
Traffic Light Upgrades Approved
In a related development, FCT Transportation Secretary Hon. Chinedum Elechi announced funding approvals for:
- Printing services for the Directorate of Road Transport Services
- Repair and maintenance of 34 existing traffic lights
- Installation of three new traffic lights in high-traffic zones within the city center
Minister Wike’s Vision: A World-Class Capital
Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Hon. Chidi Amadi, emphasized Wike’s personal commitment to environmental sanitation.
“The Minister is deeply invested in this waste management reform. Cleanliness is non-negotiable for a city aspiring to global standards,” Amadi said.
He added that the new regime will enforce stricter compliance from residents and businesses, with designated collection schedules and penalties for illegal dumping.
What Residents Should Expect
- Regular, scheduled waste pickup starting November 17
- Improved monitoring with dedicated supervisory vehicles
- Cleaner streets, drains, and public spaces
- Public awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal
The FCTA urged all residents, corporate organizations, and institutions to cooperate with the new contractors and adhere to sanitation guidelines.
