The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) is celebrating what it calls a “game-changing milestone” after the National Council on Sports approved the construction of international-standard Olympic swimming pools in the next three National Sports Festival host states – starting with Enugu (2026), then Bayelsa (2028) and Kaduna (2030).
NAqF President Dunkwu Chamberlain didn’t hold back:
“This is the biggest thing to happen to Nigerian swimming in decades. For too long our athletes have trained in substandard hotel pools or travelled abroad just to touch an Olympic-size lane. This decision changes everything.”
Federation Secretary Taiwo Oriss went further:
“If we keep this momentum, we can realistically have an Olympic-size pool in every state before 2050. This is the spark that will finally put Nigeria on the global aquatics map.”
Why This Matters So Much
- Nigeria has never won an Olympic swimming medal.
- Top swimmers like Tobi Sanni and Abiola Davies often train in 25m hotel pools instead of the required 50m Olympic standard.
- Host states have historically built temporary pools that are dismantled after the Festival — meaning zero legacy.
Now, every NSF from 2026 will leave behind a world-class aquatics centre.
Other Big Wins from the 2025 National Council on Sports (Calabar)
- New National Intermediate Games for 17–20-year-olds (think “Junior Olympics”)
- Harsh penalties for age-cheating (finally!)
- Mandatory athlete insurance for all national competitions
- Expanded Council membership to include private sector and economic heavyweights
NSC DG Bukola Olopade promised:
“We are not just hosting festivals — we are building lasting infrastructure and systems that will produce champions for generations.”
For Nigerian swimmers, divers, water polo players and synchronised swimmers who have been begging for proper facilities for years — Christmas just came early.
