Ondo Becomes Home to Nigeria’s First Methanol and Ammonium Plant for Fertilizer Growth

By Peter.

igeria’s Federal Government has hailed the Supertech Methanol and Ammonium Bicarbonate Plant in the Ondo–Linyi Industrial Hub, Ondo State, as a transformative leap forward in harnessing the nation’s vast natural gas reserves to fuel industrialization, generate employment, and foster long-term economic vitality.

During an on-site inspection, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, underscored the administration’s dedication to channeling Nigeria’s gas bounty into drivers of widespread prosperity. He spotlighted the groundbreaking facility—Nigeria’s inaugural venture into methanol and ammonium bicarbonate production, spearheaded by a Chinese firm—as a beacon of progress in local chemical and fertilizer manufacturing.

“This initiative embodies the hands-on execution of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing gas-powered industrial expansion, private-sector collaboration, and enhanced value creation in critical industries,” Ekpo declared.

He portrayed the plant not merely as an infrastructure feat, but as the fulfillment of a broader vision: converting Nigeria’s gas riches into concrete economic benefits.

Boasting an impressive annual output of 100,000 metric tons of methanol and 160,000 metric tons of ammonium bicarbonate, the plant pioneers the extension of Nigeria’s downstream gas ecosystem. Ekpo highlighted its potential to catalyze advancements in fertilizer, chemical, and raw material sectors vital for manufacturing and farming.

The minister marveled at the bold decision to dismantle and relocate the entire operation from China to Nigeria, culminating in full mechanical completion by March 2025—a testament to the partners’ engineering prowess and determination.

“President Tinubu will take great pride in this influx of capital into our gas domain,” Ekpo observed, pledging federal backing to scale output from the initial 100,000 tons to a projected 500,000 tons by 2026.

Ekpo lauded Supertech Chemical Industries Limited and its Chinese collaborators for their trust in Nigeria’s business climate, crediting recent reforms in gas and industry policies for this vote of confidence. He vowed to fortify regulatory structures, promoting investments from upstream extraction through processing, distribution, and global trade.

The endeavor, he added, will amplify local gas consumption, spur innovation, facilitate knowledge sharing, and draw additional enterprises to the burgeoning Ondo–Linyi hub.

Approaching full commissioning, Ekpo called on all involved parties to uphold rigorous safety protocols, eco-friendly practices, and operational superiority.

He extended kudos to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for cultivating a supportive ecosystem that lured this foreign direct investment, aligning seamlessly with national goals.

Supertech’s Pledge to Nigeria’s Industrial Ascendancy

Supertech Chemical Industry Limited’s Chairman, Mr. Yang Jijiang, reaffirmed the firm’s steadfast dedication to bolstering Nigeria’s gas-led industrialization and shift toward cleaner energy. Through ongoing capital infusion, workforce expansion, and skill-building initiatives, the company aims to propel the nation’s ambitions.

Yang confirmed the operational readiness of production streams yielding 100,000 tons of methanol and 160,000 tons of ammonium bicarbonate each year.

“This milestone underscores the strength of our alliance and our collective resolve to tap Nigeria’s immense gas potential for enduring industrial momentum,” he affirmed.

Cutting Ties with Imports for Self-Reliance

Dr. Alexander Ajipe, Principal Consultant to the Ondo–Linyi Industrial Hub, viewed the ministerial tour as a resounding endorsement that invigorates investor sentiment.

He framed the development as a pivotal shift for the country: “Producing our own fertilizers and methanol on home soil eradicates the need for overseas imports.”
