Otti Clarifies Visit to Kanu Had No Political Agenda

By Comfort Asemota

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has clarified that his recent visit to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at Sokoto Correctional Centre was not politically motivated.

Speaking on Friday during a visit from the Abia Diaspora Commission and the Abia Global Medical Mission 2025 team at the Government House, Umuahia, Otti responded to a social media video criticizing his visit. He emphasized that the trip was driven by the need for dialogue, peace, and conflict resolution.

Governor Otti dismissed claims linking his actions to future political ambitions, stating that he has no plans to contest for any office after completing his tenure as governor.

“One of the issues raised in the video was my ambition after serving as governor. I have said this before, and I will say it again: I will retire from public office when my tenure ends. I have no presidential, vice-presidential, or senatorial ambitions,” Otti said.

He also rejected suggestions that his visit was connected to the concept of an “Igbo presidency,” calling such claims unfounded.

“It is important to know when to quit. After completing your assignment, you make way for younger leaders. That is our principle,” he added.

On his engagement with the IPOB leader, Otti noted that he had initiated discussions on Kanu’s situation at the highest level two years ago, long before the visit. He stressed that his actions were intended for peaceful resolution and did not support the disintegration of Nigeria.

“The truth is, 24 months ago, I began high-level discussions about Nnamdi Kanu. Visiting him was the right thing because he is from my state, from Umuahia North Local Government Area,” he explained.

Governor Otti condemned violent agitation, including Operation Python Dance, emphasizing that conflicts are best resolved through dialogue rather than force.

“I have never seen a war that did not end at a negotiation table. Dialogue is always better than war,” he said.

Addressing security challenges in Abia, Otti warned that criminal elements exploit insecurity to harm citizens. He pledged that his administration would confront violence decisively while ensuring peace.

“We will continue to do everything possible to maintain peace in Abia State. Any attempt to disrupt security will be firmly addressed, but we will act responsibly as a government,” Otti stated.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to creating a safe and stable environment for residents and businesses, urging stakeholders to support dialogue-driven solutions as essential for the state’s development and progress.
