Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the wife of the Abia State Governor, has advocated for regular breast cancer screenings, continued awareness campaigns, and improved support for breast cancer patients to help reduce the prevalence of the disease in the state.
Mrs. Otti made these remarks during the observance of World Breast Cancer Awareness Week 2025 in Umuahia, under the theme “Celebrating Strength in Every Unique Story.” She was represented by Mrs. Adaeze Emetu, the wife of the Deputy Governor.
In her speech, Otti praised the bravery of breast cancer survivors, calling their strength a “beacon of hope,” and emphasized the significance of early detection and preventive care in increasing survival rates.
“We are reminded that breast cancer does not discriminate—it affects everyone, regardless of age, background, or ethnicity. It’s vital to get screened, offer support, make donations, spread awareness, and advocate for change,” she said. “To those currently facing the disease, know that you are not alone. I am here to support you every step of the way. And to the survivors, your courage is an inspiration to us all.”
Mrs. Chinenye Nwaka, Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, reiterated the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare access and supporting advocacy efforts. She called the event a “call to action” to unite in raising awareness and promoting early testing for breast cancer.

Mrs. Maureen Aghukwa, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, who was represented by Permanent Secretary Mrs. Ogechi Oguamanam, commended the First Lady, the Ministry of Health, and partner organizations for their ongoing dedication to women’s health. She urged women to prioritize regular health check-ups and self-awareness.
The event also featured a health walk through the streets of Umuahia, led by Mrs. Emetu, alongside government officials and advocacy groups. The walk aimed to raise awareness about the importance of routine breast cancer screenings and self-exams.
In October 2024, Mrs. Otti launched a state-wide women’s health initiative, offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings across Abia’s 17 local government areas. In a similar initiative in 2023, The Abia Ministry of Health, in collaboration with NGOs, provided screening for more than 2,000 women as part of a week-long awareness initiative.
