Quark AI glasses debut in China as Alibaba seeks to outdo Meta.

By Peter.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has officially entered the competitive smart glasses market with the launch of its Quark AI Glasses series on November 27, 2025. Priced starting at 1,899 yuan ($268) for the base G1 model and up to 3,799 yuan ($536) for the premium S1 variant, these lightweight AI-powered frames integrate Alibaba’s Qwen large language model and the newly launched Qwen App to deliver hands-free assistance for everyday tasks.

Unlike bulkier AR headsets from rivals like Meta’s Ray-Bans or Apple’s Vision Pro, the Quark glasses resemble ordinary eyewear with black plastic frames, weighing just 40 grams for the G1. They feature built-in cameras for POV recording, translucent displays (on S1), and seamless connectivity to Alibaba’s ecosystem, including Alipay for payments, Taobao for shopping price checks, Amap for navigation, and Fliggy for travel bookings.

Key Features and Specs

  • AI Integration: Powered by Qwen (400M+ downloads), supports real-time translation, object recognition, voice commands (“Hello Qwen”), and contextual overlays via the Quark app.
  • Hardware: Dual-chip setup (Snapdragon AR1 for AR, BES BES2800 for audio); 5 microphones (including bone-conduction); dual 10mm speakers; Bluetooth 5.4; Wi-Fi 6.
  • Models:
    • G1 (Camera-First): 1,899 yuan; focus on lightweight utility, no display.
    • S1 (Flagship Dual-Display): 3,799 yuan; translucent lenses for AR info; swappable batteries.
  • Availability: Pre-orders open on Tmall, JD.com, and Douyin; shipping from December 2025 in China. Global rollout planned for 2026 in select Asian and European markets.

Alibaba’s push into consumer AI hardware comes amid intense domestic rivalry from Xiaomi, Baidu, and Rokid, and global leaders like Meta (80% XR market share). IDC forecasts AI glasses shipments doubling to 10M+ units in 2026, driven by multimodal AI like Qwen’s vision-language capabilities.

Why Now? Alibaba’s AI Pivot

Alibaba, long dominant in e-commerce and cloud, has lagged in consumer devices. The Quark glasses aim to “capture the next traffic gateway” via AI, per executive Wu Xiaoguang, integrating with its 1B+ user ecosystem. This follows Qwen’s rapid rise (10M app downloads in first week) and browser upgrades, signaling a broader consumer AI strategy.

While Meta’s Ray-Bans emphasize social AR and Apple’s Vision Pro focuses on mixed reality, Quark prioritizes practical utility like shopping assistance and translation—tailored for China’s mobile-first consumers.

Early buzz is positive, with Tmall pre-orders surpassing 50,000 units in hours. Analysts see it as a bold bet in a $10B+ wearables market, but execution against Meta’s dominance will be key.
