“Rema’s Emotional Homecoming: Afrobeat Star Reconnects with Ancestral Roots at the Oba of Benin Palace Ahead of Historic Concert”

Afrobeat star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, recently embarked on a journey of cultural rediscovery as he traced his roots to the historic Oba of Benin Palace in Benin City. During a visit late Thursday, Rema was visibly moved by the chance to connect with his ancestral heritage and seek the blessings of the revered Benin monarch, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR.
The vibrant artist, who is set to perform his first concert in Nigeria in five years, expressed his excitement and pride in returning to Edo State for his maiden performance in Benin City this weekend. Before the concert, Rema made a courtesy call to the Oba of Benin, where he paid homage to the ancient throne, recalling memories of his forebears and reflecting on the deep cultural ties that connect him to the Benin Kingdom.
During the visit, Rema addressed the monarch with heartfelt words: “Your Majesty, I am very grateful to be here. It is a great privilege. I have seen photos of my father who was once here in past times; in the same position as me, kneeling down and showing respect. I am here to do the same! Your Majesty, I have been far away around the world, performing and representing Afrobeat; representing the Benin Culture. I have made it very important to carry our Culture along.”
Rema, who has been recognized as the “Prince of Afrobeat” by his generation, expressed his pride in being an Edo man and his commitment to promoting Benin culture worldwide. In response, Oba Ewuare II commended Rema for his efforts in celebrating Edo cultural heritage both at home and abroad, assuring him of the Palace’s continued prayers and support.
“We are happy with the way you are promoting Edo Culture around the world. We are indeed pleased with your exploits. May God grant you peace. We have confidence in you; you shall excel in life; you shall not encounter obstacles; you will not be disgraced,” the Oba prayed in Edo language.
The atmosphere was further energized by a spontaneous performance of Rema’s hit song, “Calm Down,” which captivated those in attendance, including members of the Benin Royal family and local dignitaries. Prince Idugbowa Ewuare, who had eagerly awaited Rema’s visit, joined in the celebrations, while Princess Oghogho Ewuare presented the artist with a bronze mugshot of the Oba of Benin as a token of honor.
The visit also featured a vivid display of Ugho traditional dancing by palace officials, showcasing the richness of Edo culture through their dynamic movements and oratory skills. The event was a perfect blend of ancient traditions and modern artistry, capturing a moment of cultural pride and solidarity.
