The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered 500 vulnerable women in Edo State with various items under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s (RHI) Women Empowerment Programme, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This initiative is part of a larger program aimed at promoting economic independence and enhancing the living standards of women across the country.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu was represented by Coordinator Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani. The program  took place simultaneously in five South-South states: Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Edo, and Delta. Rivers State will participate in the exercise on May 2, 2025. A total of 18,500 women across the country’s six geopolitical zones will benefit from this initiative, with the North Central zone who have received their empowerment items on February 21, 2025.

The beneficiaries in Edo State received items such as gas cookers with ovens, deep freezers, generators, and industrial grinding machines. These items are designed to support the women in starting or growing their businesses, thereby contributing to the prosperity of Nigeria.

Mrs Anani stated, “I encourage the beneficiaries to use the resources judiciously to grow their businesses. These items serve as a platform for a better life as we pray that what you receive will grow in your hands”, she said.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, represented by his Special Adviser on Media Projects, Godswill Inegbe, thanked the President and First Lady for their visionary leadership and unwavering support for the people and government of Edo State.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to women’s economic empowerment, recognizing it as a cornerstone for achieving sustainable development and societal advancement. Governor Okpebholo emphasized that his administration will not leave any woman in the state behind in its collective journey towards building a peaceful, progressive, and prosperous Edo State.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, represented by Nura Ali Rano, noted that the empowerment program aligns with SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). The program will continue to serve as a beacon of hope and empowerment, creating opportunities for Nigerian women to build sustainable development.

One of the beneficiaries, Faith Osaro, expressed her gratitude to the First Lady and her husband, as well as the state governor, for the empowerment items. She assured that she and other beneficiaries will utilize the items to grow their businesses, improve their lives, and contribute to the development of the nation.

The renewed hope initiative highlights the significance of women’s economic empowerment in nation-building and promoting sustainable development.
