Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has approved immediate renovation and expansion of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Nonwa-Gbam, Tai LGA, following a courtesy visit by NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu to Government House, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
Fubara directed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benino Anabraba, to urgently assess the scope of work and submit a report for prompt execution, emphasizing that Rivers remains one of the safest and most hospitable states in Nigeria.
Key Highlights from the Meeting
- Rivers State currently hosts 2,586 corps members (2025 Batch C) — the 4th highest in Nigeria after Lagos, FCT, and Oyo.
- 8,349 Rivers indigenes are serving nationwide.
- Corps members’ contributions save the state an estimated ₦15 billion annually in equivalent salary costs.
- Parents and corps members prefer Rivers due to its security, accommodation, and welcoming atmosphere.
Governor Fubara’s Commitments
- Immediate renovation and expansion of Nonwa-Gbam camp to accommodate growing numbers.
- Provision of office space for the newly established NYSC South-South Regional Office.
- Consideration for relocating or renovating the congested NYSC State Secretariat in Diobu (Mile 2 market area).
- Reconstitution of State and LGA NYSC Governing Boards.
Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s priority: “The basic function of government is to protect lives, safeguard property, and provide basic amenities — everything else is secondary.”
DG Nafiu commended the governor for past support, including land for the State Coordinator’s residence, and stressed the need for infrastructure upgrades ahead of 2026, when over 650,000 graduates will be eligible for mobilization nationwide.
