The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced enforcement of the ban on the production and sale of alcohol in sachet and pet bottles below 200ml.
Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this at a media parley organised by the agency in Lagos on Wednesday.
NAN reports that NAFDAC had on 11 November 2025 announced it would enforce a total ban on the items by December 2025, following a directive from the Senate.
The planned enforcement was however suspended after the Federal Government called for immediate halt of all actions pending further consultations and final directive.
Mrs Adeyeye said the agency has now received a fresh marching order from the Senate to proceed with enforcement, and NAFDAC has already begun implementation.
She explained that the decision is aimed at safeguarding public health and protecting vulnerable populations — particularly children, adolescents and young adults — from the harmful effects of alcohol.
She highlighted that the proliferation of high-alcohol-content beverages in sachets and small containers has made them easily accessible, affordable and concealable.
“We already started the enforcement to ban alcohol production in sachet and bottles below 200ml, after we received order from the senate to proceed,” she said.
“NAFDAC is not against alcohol, but we are against its proliferation of high alcohol content in sachet and small bottles, to prevent children from having easy access to it.”
Prof Adeyeye noted that prior to her tenure, sachet alcohol had alcohol concentrations of 50 to 90 per cent, describing it as extremely high and dangerous.
The enforcement is expected to curb underage access, reduce alcohol-related health risks and address public health concerns linked to cheap, high-potency alcohol products widely available in communities.
