The Federal Ministry of Education has firmly denied issuing any directive for a nationwide school closure starting Monday, November 24, 2025, labeling circulating social media claims as “false and misleading.” In a Saturday statement signed by spokesperson Folasade Boriowo, the ministry clarified that the message did not originate from the Federal Government, any state education ministry, or recognized security agencies.
“Any announcement, advisory, or notice coming from unofficial or unverified sources should be ignored and not shared. Members of the public are urged to always verify the authenticity of information before circulating it in order to curb the spread of misinformation.”
The ministry stressed relying solely on official channels for accurate updates.
Context: Targeted Closures Amid Abduction Surge
This disclaimer follows Friday’s government order to close 41 Federal Unity Colleges (secondary boarding schools) in high-risk areas, directing principals to send students home immediately due to recent kidnappings. The move, approved by Education Minister Tunji Alausa, targets vulnerability in regions like Niger and Kebbi, where over 200 students were seized from a Catholic school in Papiri on Friday alone.
Several states have independently acted:
- Kwara, Plateau, Katsina, Niger: Closed schools amid rising threats.
- Taraba: Gov. Agbu Kefas ordered all public/private schools to deboard students immediately.
No national shutdown is in effect; regular classes proceed where safe. The ministry’s alert aims to combat misinformation amid heightened parental anxiety.
