Severe Flooding in Kaduna and Katsina Displaces 17,000 People, Says NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that almost 17,000 residents were displaced by recent flooding across Kaduna and Katsina states.

The update was provided by Suleiman Muhammad, Head of Operations at NEMA’s Kaduna office, during an assessment of affected communities following the agency’s relief efforts.

Muhammad explained that the floods, which began in late August, triggered the immediate deployment of search-and-rescue teams in collaboration with other emergency agencies.

“Evacuations were carried out in Kigo Road, Bachama Road in Tudun Wada, Rafin Guza, Haliru Dantoro, Nasarawa and other submerged locations,”
he said.

He noted that an IDP camp was set up on September 13 in Tudun Wada to shelter displaced families from Bachama Road. NEMA supplied mattresses, blankets, mosquito nets and other essential items to support the state emergency management agency’s response.

Breakdown of Displacement Figures

Kaduna Metropolis:
Nine communities recorded 11,919 displaced persons.
Zaria (Tudun Jukum and Kamacha):
1,644 residents were affected.
Kankia LGA, Katsina State:
3,499 people were displaced across the Galadima I, Galadima II, and Gachi communities.

Muhammad also confirmed three deaths in Kankia but said there were no casualties in Kaduna or Zaria. Damage assessments have been forwarded to NEMA headquarters for further action.

Community Response and Relief Efforts

Residents who spoke to NAN commended NEMA’s swift intervention, confirming they received relief supplies.

The Commander of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kaduna Branch, Ahmad Tijjani, said emergency agencies worked together from the beginning.

“We rescued 43 households and moved them to the Tudun Wada camp. About 239 houses were affected in that community alone,”
he stated.

He added that minor medical conditions—such as malaria and diarrhea—were treated by medical teams deployed to the area.

Some displaced persons expressed gratitude but urged authorities to implement long-term measures.

Nasiru Suleiman, from Bachama Road, said flooding has plagued the area for over 30 years and called for waterway dredging.
Rukaiya Muhammad highlighted the loss of homes, livelihoods, and small businesses, calling for early recovery support.
Amanda Stephen, displaced from Kajuru, stressed the need for more durable assistance as many homes were destroyed.

NEMA officials also visited the office of the senator representing Kaduna Central, delivering additional relief materials for distribution to flood victims in Kaduna South.

In its November update, NEMA reported that 433,578 people were affected by flooding across 27 states and 123 local government areas as of November 4, 2025.
