Sheikh Gumi faces backlash from Charly Boy after warning against attacking bandits

By Ireti Asemota.

Nigerian music legend Charly Boy (real name Charles Oputa, aka Area Fada), 74, has gone nuclear on controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi for suggesting negotiations and amnesty for bandits instead of military action against them.

In a blistering video rant posted on X on November 24, 2025 (over 17K views, 337 likes), Charly Boy accused Gumi of being “colonized by bandit spirits” and acting as their “PRO” and “spiritual adviser.” He slammed the cleric’s repeated calls for “dialogue” as enabling killers amid Nigeria’s insecurity crisis.

Gumi’s Controversial Stance

In clips from recent interviews, Gumi argued that “attacking bandits will be a mistake” and could lead to more chaos, advocating for inclusion in budgets and listening to their grievances. “The US attacking bandits will only lead to more chaos,” he said, echoing past pleas for amnesty.

This comes amid a spike in violence: Over 200 abductions in two weeks (Niger/Kebbi schools, Kwara church), plus Borno beheadings and Plateau clashes, killing 1,000+ in 2025.

Charly Boy’s Epic Takedown

Charly Boy didn’t hold back, channeling raw Pidgin fury:

“Sheikh Gumi, come make I ask you something—you dey alright? Do u need medical attention? You Dey think before you talk? You say attacking bandits will be a mistake? Are you mad? Are you normal? Or na bandit spirit don colonize your sense? People dey cry, families dey bury children, farmers no fit go farm, villages dey empty like ghost town—and you stand for public dey defend criminals wey be your congregation? Any small thing, you go rush microphone: ‘Negotiate with them.’ ‘Don’t attack them.’ ‘Give them amnesty.’ ‘Bandits are not terrorists.’ Shut up abeg. Which kain amnesty you don ever suggest for the victims? … E clear say na you dey represent killers. God punish you for us… If na your family bandits carry, your mouth no go ever produce ‘dialogue.’ You go suddenly turn military commander. Stop talking nonsense. Stop defending evil… For once, use your influence talk truth: ‘Bandits must be crushed. Victims must be protected.’ If you no fit talk that one, at least respect your old age and shut the fuckup. Ur fathers left nyash. Make una help me rain curses on dis mad man.”

The post, featuring a clip of Gumi, has ignited X: Supporters hail Charly Boy as a “fearless voice” (#CharlyBoyVsGumi trending), while critics call it “hate speech.” Gumi, known for defending bandits as “misunderstood,” has faced similar backlash before.

Backlash & Context

Charly Boy’s tirade echoes national outrage over insecurity—President Tinubu canceled trips for ops, Senate demands 100K troops. Gumi’s “negotiation” push (e.g., 2021 bandit meetings) has long divided opinions, seen by some as pragmatic, by others as appeasement.

No response from Gumi yet. As 2027 looms, this clash spotlights Nigeria’s elite fault lines on security.
