A deadly knife attack in Taiwan on Friday left three people dead and five others injured, authorities said. The suspect ended his life by jumping from a building while being pursued by police.
The violent spree began at Taipei’s main train station, where the man reportedly detonated smoke bombs to create chaos. He then ran toward a nearby subway station in a crowded shopping area, attacking pedestrians along the way, according to Premier Cho Jung-tai.
Officials identified the suspect only by his last name, Chang. He had a prior criminal record, outstanding warrants, and his home had been previously searched. Authorities are investigating his personal connections and motives to determine whether others may have been involved.
During the attack, Chang appeared to carry petrol bombs, which ignited at the scene. He was also reportedly wearing body armor and a mask, suggesting a planned and deliberate assault. Premier Cho described the incident as “indiscriminate attacks on the public” carried out with both smoke bombs and a long knife.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, tending to the injured and securing the area. Taipei police have increased security in public transport hubs while the investigation continues into the suspect’s motives and any potential accomplices.
