Technical Education Board Plans to Embed Decentralised AI, ML Across Polytechnics”

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) will host a landmark International Conference and Seminar in Abuja from November 25–27, 2025, to unveil a revolutionary decentralised, internet-free AI and Machine Learning system designed exclusively for Nigeria’s 180+ polytechnics.

Executive Secretary Prof. Idris Bugaje announced that the initiative will end the long-standing barrier of poor or expensive internet, ensuring every polytechnic student — from Maiduguri to Lagos — has equal access to cutting-edge AI education.

Key Highlights

  • 46 custom AI/ML models developed through a Nigeria–Ethiopia–USA collaboration (Kombolcha Polytechnic, Nigerian lecturers, and MOC-LLC USA).
  • Delivered as Linux-based ISO files — institutions simply burn and install on local servers.
  • Runs on intranet only using Apache2, MySQL, and open-source tools — zero external internet or data costs required.
  • Provides campus-wide access to simulators, research libraries, datasets, and hands-on labs for teaching and applied research.
  • Covers critical sectors: agriculture, security, engineering, manufacturing, healthcare, and industrial development.

Major Milestone

NBTE will sign an implementation agreement with MOC-LLC USA to establish a permanent AI & Machine Learning Research Library Hub at NBTE headquarters in Abuja. The hub — fully funded and built by MOC-LLC — will continuously update models and resources for nationwide download.

Prof. Bugaje urged all rectors: “Install these labs immediately. This is not optional — it is the future of technical education in Nigeria.”

The conference will also train ICT units and lecturers on deployment, ensuring every polytechnic leaves with ready-to-install ISO images.

This initiative positions Nigerian polytechnics as Africa’s leaders in practical, offline AI education — no more excuses about network or funding.
