In a shocking daylight raid, armed bandits abducted at least 20 farmers, including four pregnant women and several children, from their rice fields in Unguwan-Kawo, Erena Ward, Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
The mass kidnapping occurred barely 500 meters from a military camp in Erena town, exposing glaring security gaps in one of Nigeria’s most terrorised regions.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen stormed the farmland around 4 p.m., firing sporadically before rounding up the victims and marching them into the forest. The farmers were harvesting rice when the attack happened.
As of Thursday morning, no ransom demand has been received and the victims remain in captivity.
This incident is the latest in a disturbing wave of mass abductions across Niger, Kebbi, Kwara, and Katsina states in November 2025.
