In a decisive diplomatic response, President Bola Tinubu on Thursday joined an emergency virtual summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to discuss the escalating political turmoil in Guinea-Bissau following Wednesday’s military coup.
The high-level session, held via Zoom, brought together West African leaders to coordinate a unified strategy for addressing the crisis. According to reports, Guinea-Bissau’s military detained President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and appointed General Horta Nta Na Man as interim leader for a 12-month transition period.
Photographs released by the State House Media Department showed President Tinubu participating from Abuja as discussions unfolded among heads of state.
President Tinubu previously served two consecutive terms as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government until June 2025, before handing over leadership to Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio.
With the region facing repeated threats of unconstitutional changes of government, ECOWAS continues to reinforce its commitment to defending stability, peace, and democratic governance across West Africa. Thursday’s emergency meeting underscores the bloc’s determination to respond swiftly to emerging security challenges.
