Oguntala Tobiloba is the Founder and Creative Director of TalaRayce, a Lagos-based fashion brand known for celebrating confidence, culture, and legacy through its designs. An electrical engineer by training, Tobiloba credits his education for honing his problem-solving skills, which he applies to both business and fashion.
In a recent interview, he shared insights about his journey into the fashion industry, the challenges he has faced, and his vision for Nigerian fashion.
From Engineering to Fashion: What Inspired Your Career?
“My passion for fashion was the first inspiration, but I also wanted to solve real problems and create opportunities for myself. I noticed gaps in the market, and I believed I could bring solutions that others weren’t providing,” Tobiloba explained.
Experience in the Industry
TalaRayce has been operational since 2019, marking over seven years of experience in the fashion business.
Sources of Inspiration
“I draw inspiration from everything I see and feel—colors, art, and anything that resonates with comfort. My designs gravitate toward uniqueness and personal expression,” he said.
Early Challenges and Lessons Learned
“One of the main challenges was lack of formal training. It’s not just about learning to sew; it’s about understanding stewardship in business. I learned through experience, paying with time, resources, and effort, but it taught me invaluable lessons,” Tobiloba shared.
Impact of Foreign-Made Clothes on Local Fashion
“The influx of foreign-made clothes has always existed, but Nigerians are increasingly embracing local brands. More people are now interested in tailored suits and native wear, which is gradually boosting the industry,” he explained.
Opportunities for Local Designers
Tobiloba believes the growing demand for African fashion presents opportunities both locally and globally. “Africa is on the map, and designers are working hard to meet both domestic and international demand. The Nigerian and African fashion industries are set to grow tremendously in the next decade,” he said.
Encouraging Youth Interest in Fashion Design
“Fashion is challenging, but the market is vast. Those who work hard and get it right can make money. Passion and effort are essential to succeed in this field,” he advised.
Fashion’s Contribution to National Development
Tobiloba highlighted the economic impact of fashion: “Fashion contributes to GDP and creates employment. At TalaRayce, we employ over 20 people directly and many indirectly. The industry is a major driver of national development.”
Industry Challenges and Solutions
“The lack of structure, dependence on imported materials, and artisan limitations are significant challenges. Addressing these structural gaps, especially industrially, is essential for growth,” he noted.
Navigating Economic Challenges
Economic downturns affect purchasing power, but Tobiloba credits strategic positioning and diversifying offerings for keeping the business afloat. “You need to sell more, explore new opportunities, and stay resilient,” he said.
Longevity and Fulfillment in Fashion
“I will stay in the business as long as I can impact lives. Solving problems for people, making them confident and happy, gives me fulfillment,” he shared.
Government Support for Fashion
Tobiloba suggested that government grants for textile production and local fashion manufacturing could reduce costs and boost the industry.
Competing in a Crowded Market
“Success comes from finding your unique selling point. Know what you bring to the table, and that will set you apart,” he advised.
Male and Unisex Fashion Lines
TalaRayce offers both male and female clothing, though the male line is the brand’s primary focus.
Fashion Advice for Men
“Dress confidently and smartly. Wear what is comfortable and premium. Don’t shy away from dark colors you love. Choose fabrics that suit your design concept rather than sticking to a favorite fabric,” Tobiloba said.
