At least **22 people** have died and around **80 others** were injured after a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
The accident occurred in **Sikhio district**, Nakhon Ratchasima province, when the crane — part of a $5.4 billion elevated high-speed rail project — fell onto the Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani train carrying **195 passengers**, causing derailment and severe damage to several carriages.
Footage from the scene shows the crane’s broken structure resting on giant concrete pillars above the mangled, overturned train wreckage, with one carriage reportedly torn in half by the impact.

Local police confirmed that more bodies remain to be retrieved. District police chief **Thatchapon Chinnawong** stated that **22 deaths** have been confirmed so far, with **80 injured**. Hospitals are currently assessing how many victims are in critical condition.
Eyewitness **Mitr Intrpanya**, 54, who was at the scene, described the horror:
“At around 9am, I heard a loud noise, like something sliding down from above, followed by two explosions. When I went to see what had happened, I found the crane sitting on a passenger train with three carriages. The metal from the crane appeared to strike the middle of the second carriage, slicing it in half.”
Rescue operations are ongoing after a fire at the site was extinguished.
The high-speed rail project aims to connect **Bangkok** to **Kunming** in China via Laos by 2028, as part of China’s vast **Belt and Road** infrastructure initiative. Upon completion, Chinese-made trains will run from Bangkok to **Nong Khai** on the Mekong River border with Laos at speeds up to **150 mph**.
Thailand already has more than **3,000 miles** of railway, but the outdated network has long driven most people to prefer road travel. Industrial and construction-site accidents remain common in the country due to lax enforcement of safety regulations.
