US President Donald Trump landed in Davos on Wednesday for a high-stakes appearance at the World Economic Forum, where his aggressive push to acquire Greenland from Denmark has sparked the most serious transatlantic crisis in decades.
Trump’s arrival was delayed by about three hours after a “minor electrical issue” forced his presidential jet to turn back shortly after takeoff, requiring a plane switch. He is now expected to address the elite gathering around 5:30 pm (1630 GMT), roughly three hours behind schedule.
A day before his speech, Trump mocked European leaders over Greenland, insisting the mineral-rich Arctic territory is vital for US and NATO security against Russia and China as melting ice opens new strategic routes.
Europe has closed ranks against the move:
– French President **Emmanuel Macron** vowed to stand against “bullies” and called US tariff threats “unacceptable.” France proposed a NATO exercise in Greenland and offered to contribute.
– European Commission President **Ursula von der Leyen** warned Trump’s actions risk plunging US-EU ties into a “downward spiral.”
– Canadian Prime Minister **Mark Carney** — who has worked to reduce Ottawa’s dependence on Washington since Trump floated Canada as the 51st US state — received a standing ovation for declaring: “We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition” in the US-led global order.
Trump’s Treasury Secretary **Scott Bessent** pushed back, telling Europeans to “take a deep breath” and “not have this reflexive anger and bitterness.” He urged them to wait for Trump’s arrival and “listen to his argument.”
Trump dismissed European threats of retaliatory tariffs (up to 25% on eight countries backing Denmark) as ineffective:
“Anything they do with us… all I have to do is meet it and it’s going to go ricocheting backward. But we’re not looking into that. We’ll probably be able to work something out, possibly even during the next few days.”
When asked how far he is willing to go to acquire Greenland — a fellow NATO member — Trump told reporters: “You’ll find out.”
He admitted uncertainty about how Davos would unfold: “I have no idea.”
The Greenland push forms the backdrop to Trump’s speech, originally scheduled for 2:30 pm. He plans multiple meetings on the issue during the forum.
Greenland’s prime minister warned Tuesday that its 57,000 residents must prepare for the possibility of military force.
On Thursday, Trump is expected to formally announce the charter of his so-called **“Board of Peace”** — a new body to resolve international conflicts, originally conceived for Gaza reconstruction but not explicitly limited to that territory in draft documents seen by media. Membership carries a **$1 billion** price tag.
The extraordinary assertion of US power one year into Trump’s second term has deepened the rift with Europe, overshadowing traditional WEF themes of economic cooperation and global challenges.
Davos 2026 turns tense — Trump vs Europe over Greenland escalates into open confrontation. Tariffs loom, NATO strains, and the old transatlantic order hangs in the balance. 🌍⚡
