US Ban Averted as TikTok Owner Signs Key Agreement

By Comfort Asemota

TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, has finalized binding agreements with US and international investors to continue operating its business in the United States, CEO Shou Zi Chew confirmed to employees on Thursday.

Under the deal, half of the new joint venture will be owned by a consortium of investors including Oracle, Silver Lake, and Emirati investment firm MGX. The agreement is scheduled to close on January 22, 2026.

The move resolves years of negotiations and addresses US national security concerns, effectively ending Washington’s push to force ByteDance to sell its American operations.

The deal aligns with an agreement first announced in September, when former US President Donald Trump delayed enforcement of a law that would have banned TikTok in the country unless it was sold to a US entity.
