In a raw, emotional testimony before the US House Subcommittee on Africa on Thursday, November 20, 2025, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) fought back tears while blasting President Bola Tinubu’s administration for “sitting back” and failing to curb Nigeria’s spiraling violence—particularly against Christians and moderate Muslims. The hearing, probing President Donald Trump’s October 31 redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for religious freedom abuses, drew sharp scrutiny on Abuja’s response—or lack thereof.
Huizenga’s Tearful Indictment: “Outrageous” Inaction Amid “Excuses”
Huizenga, visibly shaken, didn’t mince words: “It ought to be outrageous that it is Christians, moderate Muslims, and anyone being terrorised by these radicalised Islamists in Nigeria, and we’ve got the Tinubu government sitting back and not doing enough.”
He recounted a recent Nigerian TV interview where he bluntly answered: “No, they are not [doing enough].” Huizenga slammed a Nigerian delegation in DC for “downplaying” the crisis with “excuses,” calling it unacceptable when mass media and even US Congress members “deny or de-emphasize” the bloodshed. Drawing from personal ties—”I went to school with kids from Nigeria… neighbors who’ve been missionaries there”—he evoked a 2023 Christmas Eve massacre killing 200, questioning: “Do we see Christians killing Muslims the way radicalised Islamists kill Christians in Muslim areas?”
