Popular Kannywood actor Yakubu Mato, widely known as Malam Nata’ala, has passed away after a prolonged illness. Reports indicate that the veteran actor died on Sunday night, leaving fans and colleagues mourning his loss.
Malam Nata’ala rose to prominence through his role as an almajiri school teacher in Arewa24’s popular Hausa drama series Dadin Kowa, a performance that won him widespread admiration across Northern Nigeria. Fauziya D. Sulaiman, one of the show’s writers, confirmed his passing on Facebook, praying for Allah’s forgiveness and mercy for the late actor.
Before his breakthrough in Dadin Kowa, Mato had appeared in several Kannywood productions, becoming known for his comedic talent. He often portrayed a lively and humorous Qur’anic teacher juggling domestic challenges between two wives, a role that endeared him to audiences.
His declining health had attracted public concern in recent months, prompting fundraising efforts and reported interventions from both the Yobe State Government and officials in Niger Republic.
Condoling the family and the community, Yobe State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ya Jalo Badama, described his death as a significant loss to both the Kannywood industry and the political community. She highlighted his contributions not only to entertainment but also to political campaigns in Yobe State, particularly supporting Governor Dr. Mai Mala Buni.
Originally from Yobe State, Malam Nata’ala was a prominent figure during the Chamama comedy era alongside the late Rabilu Musa (Dan Ibro) before the rise of Arewa24 productions.
As of now, details regarding his burial have not been announced.
