Nigerian art enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the upcoming Uncle Sam Amuka Exhibition in Lagos, which will spotlight some of the country’s finest artistic talents. Among the featured artists is Fidelis Ugochuku Atumah Abiamuwe, also known as Atumakanism Afrikanism, a renowned sculptor and painter whose works celebrate African heritage.
From Early Passion to Global Recognition
Born on June 25, 1961, in Obiaruku, Delta State, Atumah discovered his artistic calling at age four, honing his skills in his father’s studio. He holds an NCE in Fine and Applied Arts (1986), a B.Ed. in Sculpture (1993), and an MFA in Sculpture (2015). Atumah has served as Head of the Fine Arts Department at the College of Education, Warri, and as Chairman of the Society of Nigerian Artists (Delta State Chapter). His works have been displayed in over thirty exhibitions worldwide, including the Guinness Art Exhibition (Lagos, 2005), New York Art Expo (2019), and Street Art Exhibition (Trenton, 2020).
A Narrator of African Identity
Atumah draws inspiration from African culture, including masquerades, folklore, music, dance, and mythology, as well as dreams and the subconscious. His paintings and sculptures blend intricate forms and vivid imagery to tell powerful stories about African history, spirituality, and social justice.
He articulates his philosophy:
“I visualize art as a medium to express moods, feelings, and passion from the subconscious, realized in creative and visual harmony.”
A Celebration of Uncle Sam Amuka
Participating in this exhibition marks Atumah’s first exhibition in Nigeria since moving to the U.S. in 2019. He describes the experience as deeply fulfilling:
“I am proud to honor Uncle Sam Amuka, whose contributions to the arts and humanity are immense. This exhibition allows me to share my latest and experimental works with collectors, dealers, and fellow artists.”
He will exhibit three 2025 works inspired by Amuka’s life and legacy:

“Gratitude” – Oil on canvas, 48” x 60”, symbolizing appreciation for life, wisdom, and accomplishments.

“Blessed All Round” – Acrylic and oil on canvas, 48” x 48”, reflecting divine blessings and the power of gratitude.

“Death is Inevitable, Life is a Gift, Tomorrow is Not Guaranteed” – Oil on canvas, 24” x 36”, a surrealist piece exploring the unpredictability of life and the importance of living with intention.
Atumah expressed excitement about collaborating with fellow masters, including Professor Dele Jegede and Dr. Bolaji Ogunwo, under the exhibition’s umbrella. He added:
“This exhibition celebrates life, excellence, and the impact of art in touching humanity. It is an honor to be part of this momentous occasion.”
