Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, led a high-level federal technical team on a comprehensive on-site assessment of Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, advancing efforts to elevate it to full international operations.
The inspection, detailed in a statement by Keyamo’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, occurred recently as a follow-up to the airport’s designation for international status approved in November 2025. To streamline the process, the delegation split into three specialized groups examining:
- The terminal building
- The aerodrome and control tower
- Runway and airside facilities
The team included key figures such as Permanent Secretary Dr. Yakubu Kofarmata, NCAA Director General Capt. Chris Najomo, and senior officials from the ministry and aviation agencies. Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno facilitated a smooth and coordinated visit.
At the inspection’s conclusion, Keyamo and the team praised the airport’s world-class infrastructure, including its ultra-modern terminal designed for seamless domestic-to-international passenger transitions and advanced Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility. They highlighted its potential to become a major aviation hub, driving connectivity, investment, and economic growth in the region.
Keyamo announced that a dedicated technical committee is already in place, with members directed to mobilize onsite from the first week of January 2026 to expedite remaining requirements for full international flights—targeting initial operations in Q1 2026.
This development builds on the Federal Government’s November 2025 approval, positioning Victor Attah International Airport as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
