Woman with Mental ill-health Delivers Bouncing Baby Girl with Imperforate Anus in Benin City

Benin City – A yet to be identified woman suffering from mental illness was in the early hours of Sunday, April 7 delivered of a bouncing baby girl that was said to weigh 3.8kg in the Ugbor Area of Benin City, the Edo State capital.
According to Liberator Margaret Quist-Igumah, Chairperson, Standup for Women Society, Edo State, the woman squeezed herself through the opening under the gate of her residence in Ugbor in Benin City where she lay down and delivered the baby half way before residents ran to her rescue.
The SWS Edo State boss however noted that the placenta could not drop until she rallied the help of medical health workers from both BIU Health Centre and the Rural Health Initiative for Improved Living (Rhifil) who immediately took the woman and her baby to the Rhifil clinic where the placenta was delivered successfully.
Meanwhile, medics have reported that after close examination of the baby, it was discovered that she had imperforate anus, a congenital defect in which the opening to the anus is either missing or blocked. They stated that the baby would require urgent surgery to correct the defect.
Comrade Adesuwa Ehimuan, Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists who joined her SWS counterpart to deliberate on how to mobilize support for the emergency surgery stated that the medical case has to be urgently treated in order to save the infant’s life.
Also rallying the support of the Chairperson of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Edo State Chapter, the SWS and Refhil have swung into further action on the case and a doctor from Military Base Hospital in Benin City has been contacted to initiate the process for an emergency surgery tomorrow in Benin City.
