Women in Golf: Anani Champions Female Participation

The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has expressed excitement over the growing participation of women in golf — a sport once perceived as male-dominated.

She made the remark during the ceremonial tee-off of the 30th Ladies Open Golf Championship held at the Benin Golf Course, G.R.A, Benin City.
Mrs. Anani encouraged more women to join the Lady Golfers’ team, highlighting the health and wellness benefits of the sport, including improved posture, exercise, and relaxation.
The Captain of the Benin Club Golf Section, Engr. Stephen Ebaretonbofa, welcomed participants and guests, noting that golf serves as a unifying game that brings people together from across the nation. He also emphasized that golf is a lifelong sport, enjoyable even into old age.
In her remarks, the Lady Captain, Benin Club Golf Section (Ladies Division), Mrs. Stella Ajayi, welcomed Her Excellency and other dignitaries, explaining that the championship aims to promote women’s participation in golf, foster friendships, and provide a platform for players to showcase their talent.
Also in attendance were the wife of the former Edo State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Maryann Philip-Shaibu; the President, Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, Mrs. Evelyn Oyome; and other notable guests.
The event concluded with a renewed call to strengthen golf development and encourage more women to embrace the sport as a tool for fitness, friendship, and empowerment.
