In commemoration of World Drug Day, observed globally on June 26, the Coordination Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani has called on young people to steer clear of substance abuse, stressing its far-reaching and destructive consequences on individuals, families, and society at large.
Mrs. Anani highlighted the dangers of drug abuse, including addiction, deteriorating physical and mental health, financial hardship, and the breakdown of family structures.
She urged youths to make informed and responsible choices that prioritize their health, wellbeing, and future aspirations.
“Substance abuse is not just a personal issue—it is a societal challenge with consequences that ripple through communities. Our youths must understand the risks and embrace healthier alternatives,” she said.
World Drug Day, officially known as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987 to raise global awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and to promote concerted efforts to achieve a drug-free society.
Illicit drug use is associated with numerous challenges, including increased risk of mental health disorders, infectious diseases, loss of employment, strained relationships, and rising crime rates. Addressing this issue requires a holistic approach involving education, prevention, treatment, and community support.
Mrs. Anani’s advocacy aligns with this year’s global theme, which emphasizes the importance of evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies. She called for stronger community collaboration and the provision of resources to support affected individuals.
By fostering an environment of awareness, support, and accountability, Mrs. Anani believes society can empower its youth and safeguard future generations from the perils of substance abuse.
