International Day of the African Child: Edo NAWOJ Calls for Renewed Action on Girl-Child Education, Protection

By Joy Ebuanekpe

As the world marks the International Day of the African Child, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Edo State Chapter, has called for bold and sustained action to protect the rights of African children especially the girl child and ensure equal access to quality education across Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the Chairperson, Comrade Adesuwa Ehimuan and Secretary, Oyemwense Odeh, they described this year’s theme, “Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now,” as a rallying cry to confront the persistent challenges facing children, including out-of-school crises, child abuse, early marriage, and gender-based discrimination.

“As women journalists and advocates, we cannot remain silent while thousands of children are denied the right to learn, grow, and dream,” Ehimuan stated. “NAWOJ remains committed to using the power of the media to amplify the voices of vulnerable children and demand accountability from duty bearers.”

The Chairperson emphasized that education is not only a right but a gateway to dignity, empowerment, and nation-building.

She urged government at all levels, civil society organization, non governmental organization and stakeholders to work together in ensuring that policies translate into action and that no child regardless of gender, location, or background is left behind.
