Bright Iyamu Condemns Incessant Killings, Kidnapings in Orhionmwon- South Constituency
By Adesuwa Ehimuan
The honourable member representing Orhionmwon South, Constituency, Edo State House of Assembly Hon. Bright Iyamu, has condemn the incessant, relentless killings and kidnappings being carried out by alleged armed herdsmen across Orhionmwon Local Government Area.
In recent weeks, dozens of Orhionmwon citizens have been brutally attacked, many abducted, some murdered forcing terrified families to abandon their farms and livelihoods.
This condemnation was contained in a press statement personally signed by Hon. Bright Iyamu and made available to journalists in Benin City.
According to the statement, a harrowing video surfaced showing a young man, named Bright Obakpolor who was allegedly almost killed by Fulani herdsmen in Umoghun‑Nokhua, adding that the victim was brought to the Oben hospital, where he is currently receiving urgent medical care and now in a stable condition.
The statement said these violent incursions violate every tenet of human rights and threaten the stability of the agrarian economy.
He decried that farmers who should be tending their fields are now gripped by fear, watching as those who feed the state become targets of ransom‑seeking criminals, stressing that such lawlessness cannot stand.
The lawmaker called on His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Commissioner of Police to immediately deploy additional security patrols to hotspots and farming corridors, establish rapid‑response units in strategic locations, and strengthen intelligence sharing between the Nigeria Police, NSCDC, DSS, and local vigilante groups.
He also urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to fast‑track implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan, enforce grazing‑reserve policies and promote ranching to eliminate open‑range herding, and close legal loopholes that allow unregulated movements of armed herdsmen.
Hon. Iyamu promised the people of Orhionmwon, to coordinate with traditional rulers, women’s associations, and youth leaders to organize community‑based networks, provide psychosocial support and emergency relief to affected families, and advocate for swift prosecution of perpetrators to serve as a deterrent.
He encouraged them to stand united against these acts of terror as they owe it to the memory of those lost and to the future of their children to reclaim their farms, restore their sense of security and ensure perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
