The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has underscored the significance of agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and development.
Speaking while receiving members of the Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI) at Government House, Benin City, Mrs. Anani described agriculture as the new “liquid gold,” highlighting its vast potential for wealth creation and economic empowerment.
She commended the group for their dedication to promoting agriculture and empowering women, stressing the need for increased female participation in the sector to enhance food security and economic sustainability.
“It is encouraging to see women and youth actively involved in agriculture. Your initiatives and programs are commendable, and I urge you to continue this impactful work,”she stated.
Mrs. Anani reaffirmed the Edo State Government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector, noting that the Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has made substantial investments to boost productivity and food security. She emphasized that women should leverage the available opportunities to maximize their potential in agriculture.
“This administration has made significant investments in agriculture, arguably the most substantial in recent history. Thanks to Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to food security, numerous programs have been designed specifically for women. It is now up to us to tap into these opportunities and make the most of them,”she said.
She further noted the World Bank’s ongoing support for agricultural development in the state, stressing the importance of accessing and effectively utilizing these resources.
“The World Bank is providing substantial funding, but the challenge lies in ensuring that we access these funds, secure our share, and channel them efficiently to boost food production in Edo State. With our fertile land and strategic focus, Edo has the potential to become a major hub for food production,” Mrs. Anani added.
In response, the Leader of NWAPDI, Mrs. Tracy Agol, expressed appreciation for Mrs. Anani’s unwavering support for women’s empowerment and agricultural advancement.
“Your Excellency, we deeply appreciate your dedication and commitment to uplifting women. We have followed your efforts both online and offline and are particularly grateful for your presence at our Annual General Meeting in Abuja. Your support means a lot to us and to NWAPDI,” she remarked.
However, Mrs. Agol lamented the marginalization of women in agriculture, emphasizing the need for greater recognition and support.
