2 min read

Individuals, Government and non governmental organizations in the South South have been called upon to be intentional in investing in the progress of women and girls around them, for a better society.

This is contained in a message signed by the Zonal Vice Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, South South, Comrade Stella Macaulay and Zonal Secretary, Comrade Eunice Emeyazia, to mark the 2024 International Women’s Day.

The women Journalists said the theme of the year’s celebration “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” was apt, especially at a time when Nigeria was battling hydra headed monsters of insecurity, high cost of Premium Motor Spirits PMS, and increasing cost of food and household items.

The South South leaders said empowering women with knowledge, skills and capital would go a long way in helping families survive the harsh economy, noting that “investments in women and girls should be intentional, with the overall aim of accelerating their growth and development.

The women Journalists stressed the importance of valuing and including the needs, interests and aspirations of women and girls in every activity, policy and programme, noting that such inclusion would help close the gender gap and achieve gender equality.

The group also sued for the celebration of women who have made impact in the various fields of human endeavors, as a way of inspiring other women into positive actions, even as it called on media practitioners to promote the talents and works of women in their various platforms.

While congratulating women on their special day, the NAWOJ South South leaders encouraged women to be creative, bold and update their knowledge constantly, to be relevant anywhere they may find themselves, while also building their managerial skills in order to effectively manage their homes and businesses.

” we may be different in age, religion, tribe and race, but let us embrace our differences and ensure inclusiveness of women around us.

“Everyone at the home front, workplace, school, community, government, and non governmental organizations, all have a role to play in supporting the advancement of women and girls” the statement added.
