The Edo State chapter of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has advocated for a multifaceted approach to reducing and eradicating drug abuse, emphasizing the far-reaching and complex effects of substance abuse.

Dr. Irene Irenosen Akhideno, president of the Edo State chapter of MWAN, made this appeal during the 2024 celebration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,” organized by the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Observed annually on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking highlights global efforts to combat substance abuse. This year’s theme, “The evidence is clear, invest in prevention,” underscores the importance of evidence-based strategies.

Dr. Akhideno remarked, “The global drug problem presents a multifaceted challenge that touches the lives of millions worldwide, from individuals struggling with substance use disorders to communities grappling with the consequences of drug trafficking and organized crime. The impact of drugs is far-reaching and complex. Central to addressing this challenge is the imperative to adopt a scientific evidence-based approach that prioritizes prevention and treatment.”
